Crochet Extra – 161st Edition – December 2019 – January 2020

It is a very exciting time to be a crocheter, particularly here in Australia. Crochet has featured extensively in this year’s runway – read more about this in our theme. And the first crochet Guild of Australia has now been launched with founding memberships currently on offer. I have been one of the committee members for the past 12 months building this and getting it off the ground and it is exciting to see so much interest in it. Of course while there has been a lot of work to get it up and running some may say the real hard work has now begun to deliver benefits to members.

At Crochet Australia we continue to work hard—one of our new cottons have arrived – Scheepjes Organicon -100% organic 4 ply cotton. When I received a sample of this to play with I thought i was in heaven -it is easy to use (and unpick), and feels lovely and soft. I also gave it to one of my customers to play with and she was overjoyed as well.

We are seeing a slow down in delivery times, due to both the increase in volume for Christmas and many road closures with the fires that are about – so don’t delay in placing your orders to ensure you receive them in time. The following are the cutoff dates we’ve been advised by our Couriers, with Australia Post generally not that different:

Thank you for all your custom throughout the year. Sarah and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and an enjoyable break with family and friends, and I look forward to more happy crafting with you in the New Year.

Until next time

Theme Crochet Fashion

Crochet is coming into style! Almost every designer had at least one piece of crochet clothing in Fashion week in New York. And it also made an appearance in the Paris Fashion show. Traditionally crochet has only been used as an accent or accessory but this year crochet has been the central theme in many outfits. Here are some of the outfits.

Check out the article in fashionista and Mason Dixon knitting for more.

As these items can only be handmade, they are pricey to buy – how about that bra top for $740? Us crocheters are in a unique position to recreate many of the outfits and be on trend! And we can save ourselves money. Surely that’s got to be a good reason to crochet garments. If you’ve never crocheted garments before, check out our tip for getting garments that fit.

I’ve put together a collection of patterns to add inspiration on top of the collections above, for the spring/summer look. The best yarn for this is cotton – I just love to use cotton for garments, particularly summer outfits. Catona, Camilla Batik, Almina and the new Organicon, as well as the Cedar bamboo/cotton and Papyrus silk/cotton are all great to use in garments. Some very fine outfits can also be made with thread.
