Crochet Extra – October 2024
You may remember from last year, that October is the beginning of my Christmas crochet preparations – hence our theme this month Getting Prepared for Christmas. Well actually I have already started, but I’m getting serious about it now. Handmade gifts I think are the best – reflecting your love with all the thought, time and effort that goes into them.
Our Annual Christmas Crochet Fun is now open for registration – we will be making this fabulous wreath designed by Live Love Crochet Shaz – with little pockets to fill with surprises! Sign up now to be part of the fun and get a good start on your Christmas decorating.
We’ve had the Ocean Mist Fine arrive just in time for the summer – a gorgeous 4 ply cotton! I can’t wait to make my first complete project in it – a summer top.
The first weekend in October is a long weekend here in Queensland for the King’s Birthday. Therefore we will be closed Monday 7th.
Saturday 12th October is I Love Yarn Day – keep an eye out on our Socials for some fun we will be having that day! Have you got plans yet?
If you are looking for crochet inspiration, our classes for the rest of the year are now open for bookings – next month we will begin the Catalina Clock – a great statement piece to hang in any room. Join us Monday nights online for classes via zoom or Tuesday mornings or Wednesday evenings in store. for this clock you can choose 2 or 3 colours. And if you are not into the sea theme, replace the numbers with flowers to help you work out the time. Let this be part of your gift giving preparations.
Until next time

Theme— Preparing for Christmas
I’ve started to see the beginnings of Christmas in the stores around us here. Fortunately it’s not yet Christmas decorations, but it did remind me that Christmas is fast approaching, and it’s time to plan and begin my range of handmade gifts and decorations to be ready in time.
If you haven’t already started looking, this month we are here to help! Hand-made gifts and decorations are perfect for anyone – work colleagues, family, friends or even to donate to the many charities out there who support those who need a hand to make their Christmas special too.
Here are just a few ideas you can consider for gifts:
For the adults – bags, coasters, place mats, mats, lamps, summer tops, hats, hat holsters, plant holders, soap savers, jug/glass covers. And while it is summer here, for those who have loved ones in the winter Northern hemisphere you can try scarves, beanies and socks
For the kids – try your hand at toys, fun rugs, dolls clothes, and other playful items.
For Pets – coats, mats, rugs and toys.
See our section below for patterns, kits and tools to help you achieve your gift giving.
Don’t forget about your own wishlist – crochet kits, yarn, patterns, accessories or contributions to a crochet getaway at one of our retreats or classes. What a magical gift that would be to have your loved ones fund some or all of your Crochet Retreat package. Making memories is so much more valuable than buying things.
But it’s not just about making gifts – preparations include decorations to create our unique festive environment.
For Christmas decorating, I find cotton the best – catona and create handmade are excellent for the many ornaments, as is the finer threads (Babylo, Cebelia and lizbeth) for something delicate to hang or for the table. They all have some beautiful christmas reds, greens and whites andAdd a sparkle with some of the metallic yarn – excel and Lizbeth or adding beads.
We feature below some patterns, kit and tools for gift making, as well as a section for preparing your christmas decorations.
What about trying this Santa Pillow by Yarnspirations. This will surely bring a smile to all. This pattern is done in 10 ply cotton but can equally be done in 8 ply.
